What the term means

Regeneration deserves
clinical precision.

“Regenerative medicine” is an umbrella term. PRP, growth-factor products, exosome-based products and stem-cell-derived products are not interchangeable. Their composition, evidence, regulatory status, preparation and intended use can differ substantially.

A responsible consultation should identify the exact option being discussed, explain what is known and uncertain, and compare it with established alternatives. Being available at a clinic does not automatically make a treatment appropriate for you.

01

Define

Clarify the actual product, source, preparation and proposed use.

02

Assess

Review your concern, health history, medication and expectations.

03

Decide

Discuss evidence, uncertainty, risks, alternatives and follow-up.

These summaries organise the consultation. They do not confirm that any option is suitable, available or recommended for a particular concern.

01 · Autologous

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a sample of your own blood. Processing aims to concentrate platelets within plasma before a clinician applies or injects it according to the planned protocol.

  • Blood collection and processing required
  • Concentration and preparation methods vary
  • Response and treatment plans vary
02 · Protein signals

Growth Factors

Growth factors are signalling proteins. Commercial and biologic preparations differ, so the source, ingredients, intended use and supporting evidence should be clearly identified.

  • Not every formula is equivalent
  • Delivery method affects the procedure
  • Product verification matters
03 · Evolving field

Exosome-Based

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles involved in cell communication. Aesthetic applications remain an evolving area, and product quality, evidence and regulatory status can differ.

  • Ask what the product contains
  • Ask about approval for the proposed use
  • Uncertainty should be explained
04 · Verify terminology

Stem-Cell-Derived

“Stem cell therapy” is sometimes used loosely in aesthetic marketing. Confirm whether the discussion concerns cells, conditioned media, extracts or another cell-derived product.

  • Source and handling require clarification
  • Live cells and derived products are different
  • Regulatory status must be considered

PRPPlasma prepared from your own blood with a platelet concentration determined by the processing method. How is it prepared, delivered and monitored for my concern?
Growth factorsA specific preparation containing signalling proteins or biologic components. What is the exact product, source and evidence for this use?
Exosome-basedA product described as containing extracellular vesicles or related components. What does it contain, and what is its regulatory status?
Stem-cell-derivedA broad label that may describe very different cells, extracts or conditioned products. What exactly is being administered, from what source, and why?

The appropriate comparison also includes established skincare, medicines, devices, hair-loss assessment and the option of no procedure.

Skin and scalp concerns

Begin with the concern,
not the product.

People often ask about regenerative options for skin quality, texture, selected scars, post-procedure care or hair thinning. The same concern can have different causes, and regenerative treatment may not be the first or only reasonable option.

Skin

A clinician can assess skin quality, active conditions, pigmentation risk, previous procedures and whether another treatment is more appropriate.

Scalp & Hair

Hair thinning benefits from diagnostic assessment. Pattern loss, nutritional factors, medication, hormonal conditions and scalp disease may require different care.

Your consultation

A clear four-step
decision process.

  1. 01

    Discuss

Share the concern, previous care, health history, medication and what you hope to change.

  2. 02

    Assess

Your physician examines the relevant area and considers whether further assessment is needed.

  3. 03

    Compare

Review the proposed protocol, alternatives, evidence, uncertainty, risks, downtime and cost.

  4. 04

    Plan

Proceed only if appropriate, with preparation, aftercare and follow-up explained in advance.

Safety and expectations

Minimally invasive does not mean
risk-free.

Possible effects depend on the product and delivery method. They may include discomfort, redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, bleeding, infection, pigmentation change or an unsatisfactory response. Injection procedures can have additional site-specific risks.

Tell your physician about pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection, allergies, bleeding or immune conditions, cancer history, previous reactions, supplements and all medication—including anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice from the prescriber.

Frequently asked

Regenerative medicine
questions.

What is PRP treatment?
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is prepared from a sample of your own blood. A centrifuge separates blood components, and the platelet-containing plasma is then used according to the planned clinical protocol. Preparation methods and platelet concentration can vary.
Is PRP the same as stem cell or exosome therapy?
No. PRP comes from your own blood. Exosome-based, growth-factor and stem-cell-derived products refer to different biologic materials. Their source, composition, evidence and regulation are not the same.
Can regenerative treatments be used for skin or hair?
Selected options may be discussed for certain skin or scalp concerns, but suitability depends on the diagnosis, health history, product, technique and alternatives. Hair loss in particular may need investigation before treatment planning.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no universal session plan. The number, interval and need for maintenance depend on the concern, protocol, response and clinician assessment. A fixed package should not replace an individual treatment plan.
When will I see a result?
Timing and degree of change vary, and some people may not achieve the hoped-for response. Your physician should explain realistic assessment points for the specific protocol rather than promise a fixed result date.
Is there downtime?
Downtime depends on the delivery method and treatment area. Redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur after needling or injections. Your clinician will explain preparation, aftercare and when to seek medical advice.
